photo+sphere is a four-day art-science event in Asheville NC focusing on the environment and our role in determining its future. As one of the event’s +and partners, Makers Circle will host a 1-week residency for artists and makers who work at the intersection of photography/film/video and the environment.

photo+sphere explores the environment through photography and photo-media and includes nationally known speakers and panelists Mel Chin, Sharon Harper, Justin Brice Guariglia, and many, many more. In addition, you will attend exhibitions, films, and performances by scientists and artists at venues throughout Asheville.

A groundbreaking interdisciplinary event, photo+sphere brings attention to how we see the environment and the role humans play in determining the future of our planet.

photo+sphere residency is one of two thematic residencies hosted by Makers Circle in 2018. Thematic Residencies are ideal for makers who are drawn to interdisciplinary dialogue and/or collaboration and draw artist across multiple mediums who wish to deepen their understanding of their unique creative work within a collaborative and communal context.

One of the most important features of our thematic residency is a chance to experience our unique brand of creative circles. Circles blend the best elements of a supportive critique with the inspiring and collaborative exchange of a salon. This residency will provide the opportunity to attend the photo+sphere festival while engaging in thoughtful and inspiring dialogue with other like-minded artists.

Duration: one-week free lodging with the option of extending your stay an additional week at a reduced rate.

Accommodation: private bedroom, shared bath and kitchen, and communal living space. Artists who choose to stay an additional week will be assigned their studio of choice.

Fees and support: Artists will be provided with free lodging. All expenses for travel, food, and festival tickets ($25)  will be covered by the artist. If the artist extends their stay, the cost for lodging and studio is $250 per week.
