Cyanotype Printing - Beginners
This 4-hour workshop will show you how to create beautiful handmade blueprints.
The cyanotype process uses a mixture of iron compounds, which when exposed to UV light and washed in water oxidize to create a beautiful Prussian blue. One of the oldest and easiest photographic processes, it is a fantastic starting point for learning alternative photographic practices. The chemicals are non-toxic and inexpensive and the equipment needed is very minimal. This process does not require a darkroom and everything you learn in this workshop can be easily replicated at home.
During this workshop, you can use digital negatives (which will be made for you from your photographs prior to the workshop) or flat objects (pressed flowers or leaves, feathers, translucent fabric or paper, etc.) to make photograms. Additionally, we will play with toning cyanotypes to a variety of different hues other than the basic blue to expand the range of creative possibilities and uses.
What you will learn:
Preparation of chemicals
Choosing paper
Coating and drying of paper
Exposing the paper
Developing the prints
Toning the prints (optional)
Cyanotype printing is a mesmerizing and beautiful process. Be warned, it is highly addictive.
